• Their first film together, Navagraham (1970), was a low-budget mythological. Muthuraman was already a known face, but Lakshmi was just 17 and new to Tamil cinema. The director picked her because she could cry on cue — and she did, in almost every scene.
• Muthuraman was a methodical actor who rehearsed lines to the syllable. Lakshmi worked on instinct. On the set of Agathiyar (1972), she once changed a dialogue mid-shot. Muthuraman didn't break character — he adjusted his response on the fly. That became their unspoken rule: she set the emotion, he anchored it.
• Their pairing in Rajaraja Cholan (1973) was so beloved that the director, A. P. Nagarajan, immediately cast them again as the lead pair in Karaikkal Ammayar (1973). That film is now considered a cult classic of Tamil devotional cinema — and it exists only because Nagarajan saw how they made each other look more vulnerable on screen.
• Off-screen, they barely spoke. Lakshmi once said in an interview that Muthuraman was 'too serious' and would sit alone reading the script between takes. She spent her time joking with the crew. But the moment the director said 'action', they clicked like old friends.
• Lakshmi later recalled: 'Muthuraman sir never complimented me on set. But after we finished Thoondil Meen (1977), he quietly told me, "You made me act better." That meant more than any award.'
