Mani Osai(1963)
Mani Osai is a 1963 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by P. Madhavan in his directorial debut. The film stars Kalyan Kumar, M. R. Radha, C. R. Vijayakumari, and Kumari Rukmani. It is a loose adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, relocated to a rural Tamil Nadu village. The story follows a deformed bell-ringer named Mani who falls in love with a temple dancer and faces persecution from a cruel landlord. The film features music by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy with lyrics by Kannadasan, including the popular song 'Devan Kovil Mani Osai'. Despite positive reviews from Kalki magazine, the film performed poorly at the box office due to the lack of a conventional handsome hero. It was released on 12 January 1963.
