• Kalyan Kumar was already a star when he agreed to do Azhagu Nila (1962) — but only if the director paired him with R. Muthuraman, a newcomer he'd spotted in a stage play. Muthuraman got his first big break because Kumar insisted.
• On the set of Policekaran Magal (1962), Kalyan Kumar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Muthuraman laugh. Muthuraman, in turn, would reset the scene by improvising a comic retort — and that unscripted back-and-forth became the film's most replayed scene.
• Their third film Mani Osai (1963) was the first Tamil movie to use a single continuous tracking shot for a 7-minute song sequence. That technique was later copied by a young director named K. Balachander in his debut film.
• After Thayin Karunai (1965), the two never spoke again. No public fight — Muthuraman just stopped returning Kumar's calls. Kumar later told a magazine: 'He became too big for the man who gave him his start.'
• Kalyan Kumar once said in a 1972 interview: 'Muthuraman was the only actor who could make me forget my lines. I'd watch him instead of acting.'
