Alaipayuthey is a 2000 Indian Tamil-language romantic musical film directed by Mani Ratnam. It stars R. Madhavan and Shalini in the lead roles. The story follows Karthik and Shakthi, two young people who fall in love on Chennai's suburban trains and elope against their parents' wishes. The film explores the tensions of married life and the maturing of love among urban Indians caught between tradition and modernity. The music was composed by A. R. Rahman. The film received mostly positive reviews and was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2001. It was later remade in Hindi as Saathiya in 2002.

Storyline
Karthik, a free-spirited software engineer, falls in love with Shakthi, a medical student, after meeting her on a train. They marry secretly when their families refuse to approve their relationship. But living together proves harder than they expected, and their love is tested by fights, guilt, and a tragic accident.
