Porkkaalam is a 1997 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Cheran. The film stars Murali, Meena, and Sanghavi in lead roles. The story follows Manikkam, a potter who struggles to find a husband for his mute sister Muthamma. Set in a rural village, the film explores the social stigma faced by disabled women and the destructive practice of dowry. Manikkam's efforts are sabotaged by his alcoholic and gambling father. The film was praised for its honest storytelling and strong performances. It won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Director for Cheran and Best Actress for Meena. Storyline
