• Cheran was a newcomer when he cast Meena in Bharathi Kannamma (1997). He had no track record as a director. Meena, already a star, took a risk saying yes to a first-time filmmaker. That film put both of them on the map.
• On the sets of Porkkaalam (1997), Cheran would rehearse scenes with Meena for hours before the camera rolled. He wanted raw, natural reactions. Meena later said his method pushed her to drop her usual 'heroine' mannerisms and act like a real village woman.
• During the shoot of Vetri Kodi Kattu (2000), Cheran and Meena developed a close friendship that lasted years after the film. They would often discuss scripts and character arcs over long phone calls, long before social media made that easy.
