Chinna Mapillai (1993) is a Tamil-language romantic comedy film directed by Santhana Bharathi. The film stars Prabhu as Thangavel, a bus-stand coolie, and Sukanya as Janaki, a landlord's daughter. Radha Ravi plays the arrogant father Aalavandhan, with Visu as the marriage broker Ambalavanan. The story follows Thangavel as he pretends to be a wealthy Singapore engineer to marry Janaki, then must maintain the lie when his father-in-law discovers his true identity. The screenplay was co-written by Crazy Mohan, known for his sharp comedic dialogue. Ilaiyaraaja composed the soundtrack, which became popular for songs like 'Vennilavu Kothipathenna'. The film was released on 14 January 1993 during the Pongal festival. Critics praised its Wodehousian comedy and engaging situations. The film was remade in Telugu, Kannada, and twice in Hindi as Coolie No. 1.

Storyline

A poor bus-stand coolie named Thangavel wants to marry a rich landlord's daughter. To win her family's approval, he pretends to be a wealthy engineer from Singapore. His lie works, but when his father-in-law discovers the truth, Thangavel must pretend to be his own twin brother to keep his marriage alive.
