The Prabhu & Santhana Bharathi partnership

After 21 years apart, they came back together for Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum (2016). They didn't share a set between 1995 and 2016. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Needhiyin Nizhal (1985) to Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum (2016). It started with Needhiyin Nizhal (1985).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Poovizhi Raja; the 2010s to Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum. Santhana Bharathi director in some, actor in others. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Prabhu was already a star when he agreed to act in Santhana Bharathi's directorial debut 'Needhiyin Nizhal' (1985). But the film bombed so hard that Santhana Bharathi later joked he had to beg Prabhu for a second chance. Prabhu gave it — and 'Poovizhi Raja' (1988) became their first hit.
  • On the sets of 'Chinna Mapillai' (1993), Santhana Bharathi realized Prabhu was terrible at comedy timing in rehearsals. So he started feeding him lines in rapid-fire bursts right before the camera rolled — making Prabhu's confused, reactive expressions the actual joke. That film became a surprise hit.
  • After 'Seethanam' (1995) flopped, the two didn't speak for nearly 20 years. They only reunited in 2016 for 'Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum' because Santhana Bharathi's son begged Prabhu to give his father one more chance. Prabhu agreed without reading the script.
  • 'Vietnam Colony' (1994) was the first Tamil film to use a colony of real-life slum dwellers as extras — not actors. Santhana Bharathi insisted on it, and Prabhu spent his own money to feed the entire colony for three weeks of shooting. That film later inspired a wave of 'real location' comedies in the late 90s.
  • Santhana Bharathi once said in a 2017 interview: 'Prabhu is the only actor who would let me ruin his career twice and still come back for a third time.' He was laughing when he said it.
