She debuted as a child artist in the Tamil mythological film Thunaivan (1969), rose to prominence in Tamil films like Kalyanaraman (1979) opposite Kamal Haasan, and dominated Hindi cinema in the 1980s with blockbusters including Himmatwala (1983), Nagina (1986), Maqsad (1984), Balidaan (1985), and Naaka Bandi (1990) alongside Dharmendra. Legacy & Influence

Sridevi, born as Sridevi Kapoor, was one of Indian cinema's most iconic and influential actresses, whose career spanned over five decades. Making her debut as a child artist in the Tamil film 'Kandhan Karunai' (1967), she transitioned into a leading lady who dominated multiple film industries, most notably Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Her breakthrough in Hindi cinema came with the fantasy film 'Himmatwala' (1983), but it was her subsequent performances that cemented her stardom. She showcased exceptional versatility, excelling in a wide range of genres—from the comedic brilliance of 'Mr. India' (1987) and 'Chandni' (1989) to the dramatic intensity of 'Sadma' (1983) and 'Lamhe' (1991). Her ability to portray complex, emotionally resonant characters, often carrying films on her shoulders at a time when male stars dominated, redefined the role of the leading actress. Films like 'ChaalBaaz' (1989) displayed her unparalleled comic timing and capacity for dual roles, while 'Nagina' (1986) and 'Mr. India' established her as a top box-office draw. After a hiatus, her triumphant return in 'English Vinglish' (2012) was critically acclaimed, proving her enduring talent and appeal. Sridevi's contribution lies in her groundbreaking screen presence, her mastery of dance and expression, and her success in shattering glass ceilings for actresses in commercial cinema. She paved the way for future generations of female performers to headline major projects. Her sudden passing in 2018 was a monumental loss to Indian cinema, but her vast body of work continues to be celebrated, studied, and adored, securing her legacy as one of the greatest and most beloved film stars in the history of Indian cinema.
