The R. Madhavan & Crane Manohar partnership

From Aethiree (2004) to Arya (2007). Arya is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Aethiree (2004).

The shape of the work

R. Madhavan acted in every film; Crane Manohar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • "Madhavan is the reason I became an actor. He saw something in me that even I didn't see." — Crane Manohar, in a 2015 interview with a Tamil film magazine.
  • Madhavan personally recommended Crane Manohar for the role of the villain in Aethiree (2004). The director Sundar C. was initially hesitant because Manohar was a stunt choreographer, not an actor. Madhavan insisted, saying Manohar's physicality would make the fight scenes real.
  • In Rendu (2006), Madhavan played a double role — one a soft lover boy, the other a violent rowdy. Crane Manohar played the main antagonist. On set, Manohar would deliberately hit harder during fight rehearsals to keep Madhavan's reactions raw. Madhavan later said those bruises helped him stay in character.
  • For Arya (2007), Madhavan asked Manohar to tone down his usual aggressive style. The result was a more controlled, menacing villain — and the scene where Manohar silently stares at Madhavan through a window became a fan favourite. Madhavan later said that look was entirely Manohar's idea.
  • After Arya (2007), Madhavan and Manohar never worked together again. But they stayed in touch. Manohar once said in an interview that Madhavan calls him every year on his birthday — and that Madhavan was the only actor who ever fought for him to get a role.
