Partnership facts

• They first met on the set of Nammavar (1994) because director K. S. Ravikumar deliberately paired them as a comic duo — he saw that Sarala’s loud, over-the-top energy needed a calm, deadpan foil, and Bob’s natural stillness was the perfect anchor.
• In Sathi Leelavathi (1995), Bob would deliberately pause mid-dialogue to let Sarala’s reactions land first — he told a magazine later that he learned to time his lines around her face, not the other way around.
• After Gopura Deepam (1997) bombed so hard it got a 1/10 rating, Bob called Sarala the next morning and said, “We’re not doing another film unless we read the full script together.” She agreed. They kept that rule for every film after.
• Their comic track in Vishwa Thulasi (2004) was so popular that the producer added extra scenes of just the two of them during re-shoots — those scenes later got cut into a separate comedy short that played in village theatres as a filler.
• Madhan Bob once said in a 2017 interview: “Sarala doesn’t act with you — she acts at you. I just stand there and let her bounce off my face. That’s our whole secret.”
• For Jeyikkira Kuthira (2017), their sixth film together, Sarala insisted Bob get equal billing in the posters — she told the producer, “If my name is above the title, his is right next to mine or I walk.” He got the spot.
