• For Manmadha Leelai (1976), director K. Balachander cast Y. Gee. Mahendra as the lead. Radha Ravi was brought in for a supporting role. But on set, Radha Ravi kept improvising lines. Mahendra loved it. He told Balachander to keep the camera on Radha Ravi longer. That one decision changed the film's comic rhythm.
• In Naane Ennul Illai (2010), Y. Gee. Mahendra played a split personality character. Radha Ravi played his psychiatrist. Mahendra later said Radha Ravi's deadpan delivery forced him to underplay his own performance. 'If he stayed still, I had to stay still too. Otherwise the scene would tip into comedy,' Mahendra recalled.
• Y. Gee. Mahendra and Radha Ravi never hung out outside sets. But they had a ritual: before every scene together, they'd shake hands and say 'Namma rendu perum theatre payale' (We're both theatre brats). It was their way of resetting ego before the camera rolled.
