The Srikanth & Pandari Bai partnership
Remarkably even — every film rates between 6.5 and 7.8. Between 1972 and 1978, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 6 years. From Aval (1972) to Sadhurangam (1978).
Uyarndhavargal (1977, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. Aval is the one most viewers reach for.
The shape of the work
Srikanth acted in every film; Pandari Bai acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Srikanth was a newcomer when he signed 'Aval' (1972). Pandari Bai, already a veteran, personally asked the director to cast him after seeing his screen test. She told the team: 'He has the eyes for tragedy.'
- On the set of 'Avan Oru Sarithiram' (1976), Pandari Bai would deliberately flub her lines in the first take. She did this to make Srikanth relax — she said his early takes were too stiff, and a little chaos loosened him up.
- During the shoot of 'Uyarndhavargal' (1977), Srikanth’s father passed away. Pandari Bai cancelled her own shooting dates for two weeks and stayed with him at his home. She cooked his meals herself.
- Their last film together, 'Sadhurangam' (1978), was the first Tamil film to feature a female stunt double for a major fight sequence. Pandari Bai insisted on it after Srikanth joked she was too old to jump off a roof. She proved him wrong by doing the stunt anyway.
- Srikanth once said in a 1980 interview: 'Pandari Bai taught me how to cry on camera. She would whisper a sad story in my ear just before the shot. I never needed glycerin after that.'
