• Vimal was already a rising star after 'Pasanga' when he signed 'Vaagai Sooda Vaa'. Iniya was a newcomer. Director A. Sarkunam specifically wanted a fresh face opposite Vimal — he didn't want an established heroine who'd overshadow the rustic tone. Iniya got the role because she looked like she belonged in that village, not because of any star power.
• In 'Vaagai Sooda Vaa', Vimal's character is loud and impulsive, while Iniya's is quiet and observant. The entire emotional arc of their romance depends on Iniya reacting — she barely speaks in the first half. Vimal later said in an interview that Iniya's silence made him work harder in every scene because he had to earn her reactions.
• During the shoot of 'Vaagai Sooda Vaa' in a remote village near Tenkasi, Vimal and Iniya were the only two actors who stayed on location for the entire 45-day schedule. They'd eat together at the same mess every night. Iniya later recalled that Vimal taught her how to walk barefoot on hot gravel for a scene — something she'd never done before.
• Iniya said about Vimal in a 2014 interview: 'He doesn't act like a hero. He acts like a co-actor. On the set of Pulivaal, he'd ask me if my shot looked okay before he'd approve his own. That's rare.'
• Their pairing in 'Vaagai Sooda Vaa' directly led to the film winning the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film in 2011. The film's success also convinced producers to back more rural romances with relatively unknown heroines — a small trend that lasted about two years in Kollywood.
