The Nayantara & P. Vasu partnership

From Chandramukhi (2005) to Kuselan (2008). Chandramukhi is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Chandramukhi (2005).

The shape of the work

Nayantara acted in every film; P. Vasu directed all of them.

Partnership facts

  • P. Vasu didn't originally plan to cast Nayantara in Chandramukhi. He saw her in a small Telugu film and rewrote the entire female lead role — a classical dancer with a haunted past — specifically for her. She was 20, barely known in Tamil, and he bet the film's entire emotional core on her.
  • On the sets of Chandramukhi, Vasu would give Nayantara only one-word directions — 'fear', 'longing', 'madness' — and let her build the scene herself. He later said she needed no blocking, just an emotion. She delivered the climax scene in one take, and the crew applauded.
  • Because of their Chandramukhi success, Vasu cast Nayantara again in Kuselan — but this time as a village wife, not a glamorous dancer. That role directly led to her being offered similar grounded parts in Aadhavan and Vettaikaaran, shifting her image from 'item girl' to 'actor' in Tamil cinema.
  • During the Chandramukhi shoot, Nayantara's mother would sit in Vasu's office every day. Vasu personally taught Nayantara Tamil dialogue delivery — she spoke only Telugu then — and made her rehearse lines with him for an hour before every scene. He never charged her for those sessions.
  • P. Vasu once said: 'Nayantara is the only actress I've worked with who could cry on cue without glycerin. In Chandramukhi, I told her to think of her father — she cried for ten minutes straight. I had to cut the scene because the camera ran out of film.'
