Partnership facts

• Lakshmi was just 17 when she signed 'Veettuku Veedu' (1970). Rajendran was a newcomer director. The producer was nervous about pairing two rookies — but the film became a sleeper hit and launched both their careers in Tamil cinema.
• Rajendran wrote 'Nawab Naarkali' (1972) specifically around Lakshmi's comic timing. He gave her long, rapid-fire dialogue sequences — something no other director had done with her before. She later said he was the first to treat her like a comedian, not just a heroine.
• On the sets of 'Nyayam Ketkirom' (1973), Rajendran would personally rehearse scenes with Lakshmi for hours after the crew left. He never did this with any other actor. She called him her 'silent mentor' in a 1975 interview.
• The success of 'Unakkaga Naan' (1976) directly led to Rajendran casting Lakshmi in his next big project — but she had already signed a multi-film deal with K. Balachander. That scheduling clash ended their collaboration permanently.
• Lakshmi once said: 'Rajendran sir never shouted on set. He would just look at me and say, "Konjam soft ah sollu" (say it a little softer). That one line taught me more about acting than any class.'
