Partnership facts

• K. Vijayan was a newcomer director when he cast Lakshmi in 'Kaval Daivam' (1969). She was already a rising star. He convinced her by narrating the entire script at her house in one sitting — she said yes on the spot.
• On the set of 'Dheiva Vamsam' (1973), Lakshmi would often rewrite her own dialogues in colloquial Tamil. Vijayan let her. He said her instinct for natural speech made his scenes land harder than his original lines.
• After 'Thyagam' (1978) flopped, Vijayan didn't call Lakshmi for seven years. She finally called him in 1985 and said, 'Let's make one more film before we both retire.' That became 'Anandha Kanneer' (1986).
• 'Anandha Kanneer' (1986) was the first Tamil film to use a single song to cover an entire character's backstory in flashback. Later directors like Bharathiraja and Mani Ratnam borrowed that structure for their own films.
• Lakshmi once told a magazine: 'Vijayan never told me how to cry. He just said, "Think of the one thing you lost." And I did. That's why our films feel real.'
