Partnership facts

• Ilavarasu and Thennavan first shared screen space in Vethu Vettu (2015), a low-budget thriller that almost didn't get a theatrical release. The director, a debutant, cast them after seeing both perform in separate stage plays — he needed actors who could work for deferred payment.
• In Maanga (2015), Ilavarasu played the straight-laced father while Thennavan was the comic sidekick. Thennavan improvised most of his lines on set, and Ilavarasu would deliberately break character to laugh — the director kept those takes because the natural reaction sold the comedy.
• Saayam (2022) was the first Tamil film to feature both actors in a father-son dynamic that flipped halfway — the son becomes the caretaker. That emotional switch later inspired a similar arc in a 2023 OTT series that both actors declined to join.
• During the shoot of Vethu Vettu, Ilavarasu's father passed away. Thennavan quietly paid for the funeral transport and didn't tell anyone until years later — Ilavarasu only found out when a crew member mentioned it in an interview.
• Thennavan once said in a 2022 podcast: 'Ilavarasu anna doesn't act with you — he acts at you. I had to match his intensity or I'd look like a cardboard cutout. That's why our scenes together have that push-pull.'
