• Jaishankar was already a star when he agreed to do 'Kalam Vellum' (1970). Vijaya Lalitha was relatively new. He specifically asked the director to cast her opposite him after seeing her in a small role. That film became their first hit together.
• In 'Nootrukku Nooru' (1971), Jaishankar played a stoic, brooding hero. Vijaya Lalitha matched him by playing a fiery, talkative woman. She set the emotional pace in every scene — he reacted to her energy, not the other way around. That push-pull made the film work.
• Their film 'Then Kinnam' (1971) was one of the earliest Tamil movies to feature a female character who openly rejects the hero's advances and walks out. That scene — where Vijaya Lalitha slaps Jaishankar — was so talked about that it inspired a similar moment in a later Kamal Haasan film.
• On the sets of 'Mappillai Azhaippu' (1972), Jaishankar and Vijaya Lalitha had a running bet: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy lunch for the entire crew. Jaishankar lost almost every day. He later joked she had a photographic memory for lines.
• Vijaya Lalitha once said in a 1980s interview: 'Jaishankar never tried to overshadow me. He let me take the lead in every emotional scene. That's rare for a hero.'
