• Jaishankar was already a rising star when he agreed to share screen space with K. A. Thangavelu in 'Vallavanukku Vallavan' (1965). Thangavelu, a veteran comedian, was initially hesitant to play second lead to a younger hero — but director M. A. Thirumugam convinced him by rewriting the role to give Thangavelu equal comic weight.
• In 'Buthisaligal' (1968), Thangavelu’s timing was so precise that Jaishankar deliberately slowed his own delivery in their scenes together — letting Thangavelu’s punchlines land first. Jaishankar later admitted he learned comic rhythm just by watching Thangavelu’s pauses.
• On the sets of 'Uruvangal Maralam' (1983), Jaishankar would bring Thangavelu filter coffee every morning. Thangavelu, who was diabetic, would sip it while they rehearsed — a ritual they kept even after the shoot ended, meeting at a coffee shop in Chennai until Thangavelu’s health declined.
• Their pairing in 'Vallavanukku Vallavan' directly inspired director S. P. Muthuraman to cast a similar hero-comedian duo in his 1979 hit 'Ninaithale Inikkum' — replacing Jaishankar with Kamal Haasan and Thangavelu with Y. G. Mahendran. Muthuraman said he wanted that same 'straight man vs. chaos' energy.
• Jaishankar once told a magazine: 'Thangavelu sir didn’t just make me laugh — he made me a better actor. In 'Buthisaligal', I was just reacting to him, and the audience thought I was acting. No, I was genuinely trying not to break character.'
