The Jaishankar & Joseph Thaliyath partnership
From Iravum Pagalum (1965) to Kathal Padhuthum Paadu (1966). The played out closed with Kathal Padhuthum Paadu in 1966. It started with Iravum Pagalum (1965).
The shape of the work
Jaishankar acted in every film; Joseph Thaliyath directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Joseph Thaliyath was a Malayali assistant director who barely spoke Tamil when he first met Jaishankar. Jaishankar, already a star, insisted Thaliyath direct him for 'Iravum Pagalum' (1965) after seeing his raw energy on set. The producer almost pulled the plug because Thaliyath couldn't read the Tamil script properly.
- On the sets of 'Vilakketriyaval' (1965), Jaishankar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Thaliyath laugh and loosen up. Thaliyath, in turn, would rewrite scenes overnight to match Jaishankar's natural swagger — turning stiff dialogues into throwaway cool lines.
- Their third film 'Kathal Padhuthum Paadu' (1966) directly inspired a young K. Balachander to cast Jaishankar in his breakthrough directorial 'Neerkumizhi' (1965). Balachander later admitted he watched their collaboration to study how to write a 'cool hero' who wasn't a cardboard cutout.
- After 'Kathal Padhuthum Paadu' wrapped in 1966, Thaliyath abruptly left Tamil cinema and returned to Kerala. Jaishankar never spoke about him publicly again. No photos of them together exist outside film stills — they simply vanished from each other's lives.
- Joseph Thaliyath once told a Malayalam magazine in the 1970s: 'Jaishankar taught me that a director's job is to stay out of the actor's way. He didn't need my instructions — he needed my trust.'
