Partnership facts

• Prabhu was already a star when he agreed to do Naam (1985). S. Ve. Shekher was a TV writer with zero film experience. Prabhu personally pushed the producer to let Shekher direct — even though the producer wanted a more established name.
• On the sets of Naam, S. Ve. Shekher would write dialogue the night before and hand it to Prabhu at 6 AM. Prabhu would memorize it in the makeup van and then improvise half of it during the take. Shekher later said he learned to write looser because Prabhu made everything sound natural anyway.
• After Naam became a hit, S. Ve. Shekher wrote a stage play specifically for Prabhu to star in. They performed it across Tamil Nadu for two years. That play is the only reason they stayed in touch — otherwise Shekher would have gone back to TV and never made another film.
• S. Ve. Shekher once told a magazine: 'Prabhu is the only actor who can make my bad lines look good. I wrote some real garbage in Kandha Kadamba Kathir Vela, and he delivered it like it was poetry.'
• The success of Naam directly led to S. Ve. Shekher getting hired to write for Kamal Haasan's next film. Without Prabhu trusting him first, Shekher never enters Kamal's orbit.
• In Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa (1999), Prabhu played three roles. S. Ve. Shekher wrote the script so that Prabhu had to switch between characters in the same scene. They shot those scenes in one take each because Prabhu refused to stop between costume changes — he just turned his back to camera and swapped props.
