• Suruli Rajan was a popular comedian, but Muthuraman was a rising hero. Director A. Kasilingam paired them in 'Annai Abirami' (1972) because he wanted a hero who could hold his own against a comic force — and Muthuraman's deadpan reactions became the secret weapon.
• In 'Kanimuthu Pappa' (1972), Suruli Rajan would deliberately throw in extra improvised lines during takes. Muthuraman learned to pause and let the laughter settle before delivering his straight reply — a rhythm they perfected over four films.
• Their 1973 film 'Sondham' was one of the earliest Tamil movies to use a double-role comedy track — Suruli Rajan played twins. Muthuraman's straight-man performance made the gags land so well that later comedians like Goundamani cited this film as an influence.
• On the sets of 'Anbu Thangai' (1974), Suruli Rajan would make Muthuraman rehearse comedy scenes at 5 AM — before anyone else arrived. Muthuraman later said those early-morning sessions taught him comic timing better than any acting class.
