• For Gopura Vasalile (1991), director Priyadarshan was looking for a fresh pair. Karthik was already a star, but Bhanupriya was relatively new to Tamil. He pushed for her casting after seeing her in a Telugu film — and she ended up being the reason the film got any attention at all.
• In Amaran (1992), Karthik played a violent, brooding character. Bhanupriya’s role was the emotional anchor. She reportedly told the director that Karthik needed to soften his eyes in their scenes together — and he actually listened. That film’s only watchable moments are the ones where she pulls that performance out of him.
• Chakravarthy (1995) was a surprise hit — and it directly led to Karthik being cast in a string of action-family dramas. Bhanupriya’s role as the supportive wife set a template that Tamil cinema copied for the next five years. Every time you see a 'strong but silent hero with a suffering wife' film in the late 90s, thank this pair.
• After Chakravarthy wrapped, Karthik and Bhanupriya never worked together again. No fallout — just drifted. Bhanupriya later said in an interview that Karthik was 'too busy being a star' by then, and she was already shifting focus to television. They didn't even exchange numbers after the last shoot.
• Bhanupriya once said about Karthik: 'He was the only hero who would actually rehearse with me before a scene. Others just showed up and expected me to match them. He made it a two-way street.' She said this in a 1996 interview with Ananda Vikatan.
