The 1990s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Server Sundaram; the 1990s to Cheran Pandiyan. Goundamani acted in every film; Nagesh acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• They only shared screen space in three films across 31 years. The first was Server Sundaram (1964), where Nagesh was already a star and Goundamani was a newcomer. Director C. V. Sridhar cast Goundamani on a whim after seeing him in a stage play — Nagesh had no say in it.
• In Server Sundaram, Nagesh played the fast-talking, nervous lead while Goundamani played a deadpan, slow-burn sidekick. That rhythm — Nagesh rushing, Goundamani dragging — became their signature. Goundamani later said he learned comic timing by watching Nagesh's pauses on set.
• Goundamani has said in interviews that Nagesh was the only co-star who ever corrected his dialogue delivery on set. Nagesh would pull him aside between takes and whisper, 'Slow down, let the laugh land first.' They never argued about it.
• Their second film together, Priyamudan Prabhu (1984), was a flop. But it was the only film where they played brothers — and that brotherly dynamic directly inspired the later Goundamani-Senthil pairing, which dominated Tamil comedy for two decades.
• Goundamani once said: 'Nagesh sir taught me that comedy is not about making people laugh — it's about making them wait for the laugh. I still use that lesson.' He said this in a 2005 TV interview on Kalaignar TV.
