• Before Thangam Manasu Thangam (1960), Prem Nazir was already a huge star in Malayalam, but M. N. Rajam was relatively new to Tamil cinema. Director A. S. A. Sami specifically paired them because he wanted a fresh, non-Madras face opposite Rajam — and Nazir agreed to the Tamil film only after Rajam personally requested him on set.
• In Thilakam (1960), Nazir and Rajam had a famous duet scene where Rajam had to cry while singing. Nazir, known for his comic timing, deliberately cracked a joke between takes to lighten her mood — and the director kept the genuine, half-smile she gave in the final cut.
• During the shoot of Pirandha Naal (1962), Nazir and Rajam developed a ritual: before every emotional scene, they would share a cup of filter coffee and rehearse the dialogue in Malayalam first, then switch to Tamil. Rajam later said it helped them find the same emotional pitch.
• M. N. Rajam once told a magazine: 'Prem Nazir made me feel like I was acting with a mirror — he gave back exactly what I gave him, but better. I never had to act alone with him.'
• The success of Thangam Manasu Thangam (1960) directly led to Nazir being cast in more Tamil films — he went on to do over 30 Tamil movies after this pairing. Rajam, meanwhile, became the go-to heroine for directors wanting a 'graceful but fiery' lead, a template she and Nazir perfected together.
