Partnership facts

• Ranjith was a newcomer when he cast Charlie in Ninaithen Vandhai (1998). Charlie was already a known comedian, but he took a risk on a first-time director. That film bombed hard — 1/10 territory — but Charlie stuck with Ranjith for Hello (1999) anyway.
• Charlie was the one who set the comic timing on set. Ranjith admitted in interviews that he'd write a scene, then let Charlie improvise the punchlines. That's why their comedies feel loose and natural — Charlie was basically co-writing the humour in real time.
• Pandavar Bhoomi (2001) was the film that launched Charlie as a solo lead in a comedy role. Before that, he was always part of an ensemble. After this film, other directors started writing full-length comic tracks around him.
• Ranjith and Charlie were close friends off-screen. They'd often travel together to shoots in the same car, and Charlie would keep the crew laughing during breaks. Their bond was so strong that when Charlie fell ill in the mid-2000s, Ranjith delayed Thirumagan (2007) by nearly a year to wait for him to recover.
• Ranjith once said about Charlie: 'He doesn't just act — he breathes life into a scene. I'd write a joke, but he'd make it a moment.' He said this during the audio launch of Thirumagan (2007).
