• Charle was a popular stage actor when director K. Bhagyaraj cast him in 'Ore Oru Gramathiley' (1987). But Bhagyaraj paired him with Poornam Viswanathan specifically because he wanted a seasoned, older actor who could match Charle's raw energy without overpowering him. Viswanathan was the only one who said yes to the role without reading the full script.
• In 'Varusham Padhinaaru' (1989), Viswanathan and Charle had a single long-take argument scene that ran nearly 8 minutes. Charle later said Viswanathan would deliberately pause mid-dialogue to throw off his rhythm, forcing Charle to stay fully present. That scene is the only reason the film is remembered today.
• Viswanathan and Charle never shared a meal together on any of the three sets. Charle was a strict vegetarian; Viswanathan ate only non-veg. They respected each other's habits so much that they'd schedule their lunch breaks at different times to avoid awkwardness. Not once in three films did they sit at the same table.
• Charle once told a magazine: 'Viswanathan sir would finish his shot and then stand behind the camera just to watch me. He never gave me acting tips. He just stared. That stare taught me more than any dialogue coach ever did.'
• Their only commercially successful film together, 'Ore Oru Gramathiley' (1987), directly inspired director Balu Mahendra to cast Charle in his next film 'Veedu' (1988). Mahendra said he saw in Charle's performance opposite Viswanathan a 'stillness that could carry a tragedy.' Without that pairing, Charle might never have transitioned from comedy to serious roles.
