The 1980s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Manthoppu Killiye; the 1980s to Paurnami Nilavil. Vijayan acted in every film; M. A. Kaja directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Vijayan was a stunt master and fight choreographer before he turned actor. Kaja, a producer, saw him on a set and offered him the lead in Manthoppu Killiye (1979) — but only if Vijayan agreed to also choreograph the fights. Vijayan said yes on the spot.
• On the sets of Oru Vidukadhai Oru Thodarkadhai (1979), Kaja would write dialogue in the morning and hand it to Vijayan, who would then rewrite his lines in colloquial slang before shooting. Kaja never objected — he said Vijayan's version always sounded more real.
• Their 1980 film Valli Mayil introduced a then-unknown comedian named Goundamani in a small role. Kaja cast him on Vijayan's insistence after Vijayan saw him in a stage play. That film became Goundamani's first break in Tamil cinema.
• During the shoot of Theru Vilakku (1980), Vijayan broke his ankle during a fight scene. Kaja refused to replace him or pause production — instead, he rewrote the script to have Vijayan's character limp through the rest of the film. The limp became a signature move in later Vijayan films.
• After Vasanthakalam (1981), Kaja stopped producing films and Vijayan moved to television. They never worked together again, but Vijayan attended Kaja's daughter's wedding in 1995 — the only actor from those eight films who showed up.
