• Their first film together, Nee (1965), almost didn't happen. Jayalalitha was just 17 and a huge star already. Jaishankar was still finding his footing. Director C. V. Sridhar pushed for the pairing because he wanted a fresh, young couple — and it worked so well that they made seven more films.
• Jaishankar once said in an interview that Jayalalitha made him a better actor. He explained: 'She was so sharp with her dialogue delivery that I had to raise my game. If I was even a second late, she'd steal the scene.' That competitive push is why their scenes crackle in films like Muthuchippi (1968).
• Off-screen, they were close friends. Jayalalitha would often cook for Jaishankar during long shoots. He later recalled that she made the best biryani he ever had. They stayed in touch even after she left films for politics.
• Their film Thanga Gopuram (1971) directly inspired the 1975 Hindi hit Chhoti Si Mulaqat. The Tamil original was a sleeper hit, and Bollywood producers bought the remake rights specifically because of the Jayalalitha-Jaishankar chemistry.
• Jaishankar once told a magazine: 'Jayalalitha was the only co-star who could make me nervous. She'd finish her lines and then stare at me waiting for my response. I had to be perfect.'
• In Vandhaale Magarasi (1973), they played a married couple for the first time. The film's success was built on how naturally they bickered and made up — Jaishankar's easygoing charm balanced Jayalalitha's fiery intensity. That dynamic became the template for many Tamil family dramas that followed.
