• For their first film together, Thisai Mariya Paravaigal (1979), director S. P. Muthuraman was unsure about casting Sumalatha opposite Sarath Babu. She had to audition twice before he greenlit the pairing.
• In Megathukkum Dhagam Undu (1980), Sarath Babu deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery to match Sumalatha's natural rhythm. She later said that made their emotional scenes feel more real than rehearsed.
• During the shoot of Azhagiya Kanne (1982), Sarath Babu would bring Sumalatha filter coffee from a specific shop in Kodambakkam every morning. She returned the favour by packing him homemade murukku for evening shots.
• Their 1982 film Sparisam was one of the first Tamil movies to openly discuss marital intimacy without vulgarity. It directly inspired director K. Balachander to cast them again in a similar mature role — but the project never materialized.
• Sumalatha once told a magazine: 'Sarath Babu never tried to overshadow me in a scene. He gave me space to breathe as an actress. That's rare in this industry.'
• After Asthram (2006), they didn't speak for nearly a decade. Sarath Babu later revealed it was because of a misunderstanding over a missed phone call during a family emergency. They reconciled only in 2018 at a mutual friend's wedding.
