Partnership facts

• Ramanna first cast Nagesh in 'Nee' (1965) after seeing him as a comedian in other films. But Nagesh begged for a full dramatic role. Ramanna took a risk — and Nagesh delivered a performance that made audiences cry.
• On the set of 'Naan' (1967), Nagesh would improvise entire monologues. Ramanna never stopped him. Instead, he'd quietly adjust the camera to catch every word. That film became a cult hit for its raw, unscripted energy.
• Their film 'Moondrezhuthu' (1968) was one of the first Tamil movies to use a non-linear flashback structure. Later, director K. Balachander admitted he borrowed that technique for his own breakthrough film.
• Ramanna and Nagesh had a standing ritual: before every first day of shoot, they'd share a single cup of filter coffee at the same Madras canteen. They did this for all seven films, without fail.
• Nagesh once said about Ramanna: 'He didn't direct me. He just let me be mad on screen, and then he'd say — “Ippo paaru, idhu dhaan cinema” (Now look, this is cinema).'
