Partnership facts

• Nagesh was already a comedy star when he agreed to play the lead in Ennai Pol Oruvan (1965). But UshaNandhini was a newcomer. The director, C. V. Sridhar, took a risk pairing a seasoned comedian with a fresh face — and it worked because Nagesh deliberately slowed his comic timing to let her hold the screen.
• In Veettukoru Pillai (1971), Nagesh played a man pretending to be a woman. UshaNandhini played his wife. The comedy came from her reacting to his 'female' mannerisms — she set the straight-man rhythm, and he bounced off her disbelief. She didn't laugh on set, which made his takes sharper.
• UshaNandhini later said Nagesh was the only co-star who never made her feel like a supporting actress. On the sets of Athaiya Mamiya (1974), he would rehearse scenes with her in the corner before the director called action — something he didn't do with other heroines.
• UshaNandhini once told an interviewer: 'Nagesh sir would say, "Don't act. Just look at me and react." That's all I did in all three films. He carried the scene, but he made sure I looked good doing it.'
• Ennai Pol Oruvan (1965) was remade in Hindi as Do Kaliyaan (1968) — but the original Tamil version's success directly led to Nagesh being cast as a lead in more family comedies, a shift from his earlier sidekick roles. UshaNandhini's performance in that film got her noticed by K. Balachander, who later cast her in major roles.
