Ennai Pol Oruvan is a 1965 Indian Tamil-language drama film written, co-produced and directed by writer Jayakanthan in his directorial debut. The cast includes R. Gandhimathi as Thangam, P. Udhayan as Chitti Babu, S. Prabhakar as Manickam, and A. K. Veerasamy as the ice cream factory owner. The story follows a single mother working as a construction labourer in a Chennai slum, her irresponsible son, and the arrival of a new man that disrupts their fragile bond. The film has no songs and features a background score by Chitti Babu. It won the National Film Award for Third Best Feature Film at the 12th National Film Awards. Critics consider it the first neo-realistic film in Tamil cinema and a trendsetter for realistic filmmaking. The film was a box office failure but received high praise from French critic Georges Sadoul and politician K. Kamaraj. It was released on 27 February 1965 and is available on YouTube.
