The Sivakumar & Vijayakumar partnership

After 22 years apart, they came back together for Malabar Police (1999). They didn't share a set between 1977 and 1999. From Ponnukku Thanga Manasu (1973) to Malabar Police (1999).

It started with Ponnukku Thanga Manasu (1973). The played out closed with Malabar Police in 1999.

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Ponnukku Thanga Manasu; the 1990s to Malabar Police. Sivakumar acted in every film; Vijayakumar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • For their first film together, Ponnukku Thanga Manasu (1973), director M. A. Thirumugam cast Sivakumar as the lead. But he needed a strong villain. He picked Vijayakumar, who was still finding his footing. That role turned Vijayakumar into a sought-after antagonist overnight.
  • In Sorgam Naragam (1977), Sivakumar played the righteous hero and Vijayakumar the ruthless villain. Their scenes worked because Sivakumar’s calm, measured delivery forced Vijayakumar to dial up his intensity. Vijayakumar later said he had to 'match Sivakumar’s stillness with fire' to make the conflict pop.
  • Despite playing bitter rivals on screen, Sivakumar and Vijayakumar were close friends off it. On the sets of Malabar Police (1999), they would share lunch together every single day, often discussing their children’s careers. Vijayakumar’s son Arun Vijay was a child actor then, and Sivakumar’s son Suriya was just starting out.
  • Malabar Police (1999) was the only film where they played allies instead of enemies. It was also the film that introduced Vijayakumar’s son Arun Vijay as a lead. Sivakumar personally recommended Arun Vijay to the director after seeing his audition tape.
  • Vijayakumar once said in a 2005 interview: 'Sivakumar and I never needed a rehearsal. We just looked at each other and knew what the scene needed. That’s why our fights looked real — because we trusted each other completely.'
