The Venu & Venu Thottempudi partnership

Between 2003 and 2009, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 6 years. From Pellam Oorelithe (2003) to Gopi Gopika Godavari (2009). Sri Krishna 2006 is the one most viewers reach for.

It started with Pellam Oorelithe (2003).

The shape of the work

Venu acted in every film; Venu Thottempudi acted in all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Venu Thottempudi wasn't the first choice for Pellam Oorelithe. Director E. V. V. Satyanarayana wanted a bigger star. But Venu (the director) insisted on casting his friend, saying the role needed someone who could look genuinely confused and vulnerable — not a mass hero.
  • On the sets of Sri Krishna 2006, Venu Thottempudi would deliberately flub his lines in the first take. He knew the director Venu would laugh and loosen up. That one laugh set the tone for the whole scene — the director's relaxed energy let Thottempudi try wilder comic timing.
  • Deepavali (2008) was the first Telugu film where music composer Devi Sri Prasad used a full brass section for a folk number. The director Venu gave him the budget for it after Thottempudi begged for 'something that sounds like a real village wedding'. That track later became a template for DSP's massy folk songs.
  • After Deepavali flopped, the two Venu's didn't speak for nearly two years. The director felt Thottempudi had stopped taking his feedback seriously. They patched up only when Thottempudi showed up at the director's house unannounced with a bottle of Old Monk — their drink from the Pellam Oorelithe days.
  • Director Venu once said in an interview: 'Thottempudi is the only actor who can make me laugh even when I'm angry at him. On Deepavali, I was furious about a delay, and he just looked at me with that face — I forgot why I was mad.'
