• Ambika was already a star when she agreed to do 'Engal Kural' (1985), but S. S. Chandran was still a supporting actor. She personally asked the director to cast him as her hero — she had seen his comic timing in a stage play and thought he could pull off a serious romantic role.
• On the sets of 'Nagam' (1985), Chandran would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Ambika laugh. She'd then loosen up and deliver her emotional scenes more naturally. The director told a magazine later that this was their secret rhythm — he broke the tension, she carried the weight.
• During the shoot of 'Anjatha Singam' (1988), Ambika and Chandran had a running bet: whoever forgot their lines first had to buy the other a box of Mysore Pak from the local sweet shop. Chandran lost every single day — and later admitted he did it on purpose because he liked the sweets.
• Ambika once said in a 1990 interview: 'Chandran made me feel like I was acting with a friend, not a co-star. He never let the camera make me nervous.'
• Their pairing in 'Engal Kural' (1985) was so well-received that the director of that film, R. Sundarrajan, cast them again in 'Nagam' the same year — and then wrote 'Anjatha Singam' (1988) specifically as a vehicle for both of them. That third film became a minor cult hit in B-circuit theatres.
