• Sathyaraj was a newcomer when he signed 'Kannan Oru Kai Kuzhandhai' (1978). Sumithra was already a known face. She personally recommended him to the director after a screen test — that's how their first film together got locked.
• In 'Muthal Iravu' (1979), Sumithra played a bold, emotionally volatile character. Sathyaraj later said she set the emotional pace in every scene — he had to match her intensity or the take would feel flat. She pushed him to act with his eyes, not just his dialogue.
• After 'Airport' (1993) bombed hard, Sathyaraj and Sumithra never worked together again. But they stayed in touch. Sumithra once called him to ask for a cameo in a TV serial she was producing in the early 2000s — he said yes without reading the script.
• Sumithra said in a 1994 interview: 'Sathyaraj was raw in our first film. By our third, he was teaching me how to time a punchline. That growth happened because we trusted each other to fail on screen.'
• Their second film 'Muthal Iravu' was one of the earliest Tamil films to center a female character's sexual agency without moralizing. That script was written specifically for Sumithra — and she insisted Sathyaraj be cast as the male lead because she wanted someone who wouldn't overshadow her performance.
