The Prakash Raj & Sangeetha partnership

After 15 years apart, they came back together for Varisu (2023). They didn't share a set between 2008 and 2023. From Khadgam (2002) to Varisu (2023).

Their most recent film, Varisu, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active. It started with Khadgam (2002).

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Dhanam; the 2020s to Varisu. Prakash Raj acted in every film; Sangeetha acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • For Khadgam (2002), director Surya Prakash wanted a fresh pair for the romantic track. Prakash Raj, already a known face, suggested Sangeetha after seeing her in a Telugu film. He personally called her to audition.
  • In Dhanam (2008), Prakash Raj played a ruthless loan shark. Sangeetha’s character was his victim. He deliberately stayed in character between takes — cold, silent, refusing to chat — to keep her genuinely unsettled. She later said it made her performance more raw.
  • After Dhanam flopped, the two didn't speak for nearly a decade. They only reconnected on the sets of Varisu (2023) when a mutual friend forced them to sit together at lunch. By the end of the shoot, they were joking about the old fight.
  • Sangeetha told a behind-the-scenes interviewer during Varisu: 'Prakash Raj sir is the only co-star who made me cry on set — and then made me laugh five minutes later. I don't know how he does that.'
  • Their pairing in Khadgam (2002) was so well-received that the director of Dhanam (2008) specifically wrote the female lead with Sangeetha in mind — just to recreate that tension. It didn't work commercially, but the film later gained a cult following on satellite TV.
