The Urvashi & S. Ve. Shekher partnership

After 14 years apart, they came back together for Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa (1999). They didn't share a set between 1985 and 1999. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Oomai Janangal (1984) to Sigamani Ramamani (2001). Naam is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Naam; the 2000s to Sigamani Ramamani. Urvashi acted in every film; S. Ve. Shekher acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first met on the set of Oomai Janangal (1984). Urvashi was already a star. Shekher was a TV writer trying to break into films. She later said she had no idea who he was until the director told her to watch his comedy timing.
  • In Naam (1985), Shekher wrote most of his own dialogues on set. Urvashi would feed him straight lines, and he’d twist them into punchlines mid-scene. She called it 'controlled chaos' — she kept the rhythm, he added the surprise.
  • Their pairing in Naam (1985) was so well-received that it directly led to Shekher being cast as the lead in his own solo comedy films. Urvashi’s straight-woman energy made producers realize he could carry a film without a top-tier heroine.
  • During the disastrous Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa (1999) shoot, Urvashi and Shekher would crack each other up between takes to survive the boredom. She later told a magazine they spent more time laughing at the script than actually filming it.
  • Urvashi once said about Shekher: 'He doesn’t act with you — he acts at you. You have to dodge his energy and throw it back. That’s why only a few actresses worked with him twice.'
  • Sigamani Ramamani (2001) was their last film together — and it almost didn’t happen. Shekher rewrote the entire female lead role specifically for Urvashi after the original actress dropped out. She agreed only if he promised to not improvise more than three takes per scene.
