• Manivannan was already a star writer-director when he cast Urvashi in Ambigai Neril Vanthaal (1984). He didn't just direct her — he wrote the role specifically to break her out of the 'sweet girl' image. She was 17 and terrified of his intensity on set.
• On Veera Padhakkam (1994), Manivannan played Urvashi's father. He deliberately under-acted in every scene with her — he told her later that he wanted her anger to fill the screen. She said it was the only time a co-star made her cry by holding back.
• By the time they made Ettupatti Rasa (1997), Manivannan was struggling with health issues. Urvashi would bring him homemade kanji (rice porridge) to the set every morning. He never thanked her out loud — just nodded and ate it.
• Urvashi once said in a 2010 interview: 'Manivannan sir never praised me. Not once. But he would re-shoot a scene if I looked tired. That was his way of saying I mattered.'
• Their only film together that wasn't a family drama — Veera Padhakkam — directly inspired the 2000s trend of 'mother-sentiment' films in Tamil cinema. It proved that a female-led emotional story could run for 100 days. Producers started copying the template overnight.
