The Srividya & V. Gopalakrishnan partnership

After 18 years apart, they came back together for Amma Pillai (1990). They didn't share a set between 1972 and 1990. From Velli Vizha (1972) to Oor Mariyadhai (1992).

Velli Vizha is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Velli Vizha (1972).

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Velli Vizha; the 1990s to Oor Mariyadhai. Srividya acted in every film; V. Gopalakrishnan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Velli Vizha (1972) was their first film together, but it almost didn't happen. Director A. C. Tirulokchandar wanted a fresh face opposite Sivaji Ganesan. V. Gopalakrishnan personally recommended Srividya, who was then a newcomer from Malayalam cinema. He convinced the director she could hold her own against a legend.
  • In Velli Vizha, Gopalakrishnan played the villain who torments Srividya's character. Off-screen, he became her acting coach. He would rehearse scenes with her late into the night, teaching her how to modulate her voice for Tamil dialogue — she was still learning the language then.
  • After Velli Vizha, Srividya and Gopalakrishnan stayed close friends for decades. She called him 'Gopu anna' (elder brother). When she moved to Chennai permanently in the 1980s, he was the one who helped her find an apartment and introduced her to key producers.
  • Their third and final film together, Oor Mariyadhai (1992), was a low-budget family drama. But it directly led to Srividya being cast in the iconic TV serial 'Chithi' (1999). The serial's director, R. Sarathkumar, saw her performance in Oor Mariyadhai and decided she was perfect for the role of the matriarch.
  • Srividya once said in a 1995 interview: 'Gopu anna was the first person in Tamil cinema who believed in me. He didn't just act with me — he taught me how to survive in this industry.'
