The R. Parthiban & P. Vasu partnership

From Vaimaye Vellum (1997) to Kakkai Siraginilae (2000). Kakkai Siraginilae is the one most viewers reach for. The played out closed with Kakkai Siraginilae in 2000.

It started with Vaimaye Vellum (1997).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Suyamvaram; the 2000s to Kakkai Siraginilae. R. Parthiban acted in every film; P. Vasu directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • P. Vasu was initially hesitant to cast R. Parthiban in Vaimaye Vellum (1997) because he thought Parthiban's intense image wouldn't suit the film's lighter tone. Parthiban convinced him by showing up to a meeting in a lungi and telling a string of jokes on the spot.
  • On the sets of Suyamvaram (1999), Parthiban would rewrite his own dialogues the night before shooting, and Vasu would let him — but only if Parthiban performed both versions in one take. Vasu would then pick the better one in the edit room.
  • Kakkai Siraginilae (2000) directly launched the career of composer Bharadwaj in Tamil cinema. Vasu gave him the break after hearing his demo, and Parthiban insisted on using his raw, folk-heavy sound — which became the film's biggest talking point.
  • During the shoot of Vaimaye Vellum, Parthiban and Vasu shared a room in a small lodge in Kumbakonam for three weeks. They would stay up past midnight arguing about shot compositions, then wake up at 5 AM to shoot the same scene again.
  • P. Vasu once said in an interview: 'Parthiban is the only actor who would argue with me about a scene, then quietly do it my way — and still make it look like his idea on screen.'
  • In Kakkai Siraginilae (2000), Vasu deliberately wrote a role that required Parthiban to cry in three different ways — angry tears, helpless tears, and silent tears. Parthiban shot all three in one continuous take, and Vasu kept the camera rolling for an extra minute just to capture the aftermath.
