The 1960s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Karpagam; the 1970s to Dasavataram. K. S. Gopalakrishnan directed every film; M. R. Radha acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Gopalakrishnan cast Radha in 'Saradha' (1962) against the advice of his producers. They thought Radha's villain image would tank a family drama. Gopalakrishnan bet on Radha's range — and the film became a hit.
• On the sets of 'Chitthi' (1966), Radha would rewrite his own dialogues in the morning and show them to Gopalakrishnan. The director let him keep most of it. That's why Radha's character in that film sounds more natural than his usual stagey delivery.
• After 'Dasavataram' (1976) wrapped, the two never spoke again. No public fight — Gopalakrishnan just moved on to other actors. Radha, hurt, told a mutual friend: 'He finished with me like I was a used prop.'
• The success of 'Saradha' (1962) directly led to Gopalakrishnan being offered bigger budgets. He used that clout to launch a young Sivaji Ganesan in a non-commercial role the next year. Without Radha's performance in that film, Sivaji might never have taken that risk.
• Radha once told a magazine: 'Gopalakrishnan is the only director who let me be a human being on screen. Others just wanted me to snarl.' He said this in 1970, six years before their last film together.
