Partnership facts

• Sridhar cast Padmini in 'Meenda Sorgam' (1960) after watching her in a Telugu film. He later said he chose her because she could cry on cue without glycerin — a rare skill he needed for the emotional climax.
• On the sets of 'Then Nilavu' (1961), Sridhar would write dialogues in the morning and hand them to Padmini just before the shot. She never flubbed a line. He told the crew she had a photographic memory for Tamil — even though she was a native Telugu speaker.
• In 'Nenjam Marappathillai' (1963), Sridhar deliberately shot Padmini's breakdown scene in one long take — no cuts. He knew she could sustain the emotion without breaking character. The scene ran over four minutes. It became the film's most talked-about moment.
• After 'Nenjam Marappathillai', Sridhar and Padmini never worked together again. No fallout — he just shifted to directing bigger-budget films with younger heroines. But Padmini remained the only actress he ever called 'my lucky charm' in a press interview.
• Padmini once said about Sridhar: 'He didn't direct me. He just told me the story and let me act. That trust made me give my best.' She said this in a 1985 interview with 'Kumudam' magazine.
