• They first shared screen space in Bandish (1980), but the pairing almost didn't happen — Danny was initially cast as the villain in a smaller role. Rajesh Khanna personally asked the director to expand Danny's part after seeing his intensity in a test scene.
• In Phir Wohi Raat (1980), Danny played a menacing stalker while Rajesh played the helpless hero. The tension worked because Danny refused to blink during their face-offs — he told Rajesh off-camera that he'd hold his stare until Rajesh flinched first. Rajesh never did, and the takes became legendary on set.
• Despite playing bitter rivals on screen, Rajesh and Danny were close friends off it. Danny later revealed that Rajesh would drive to his house unannounced at 2 AM just to chat about films and life — and that Rajesh was the only co-star who ever cooked him dinner.
• "Rajesh was the only hero who didn't treat me like a sidekick. He'd say, 'Danny, you make me look good — so I better keep up.'" — Danny Denzongpa, in a 2018 interview with Filmfare.
• Their third and final film together, Adhikar (1986), was a box-office disaster — but it directly inspired a young Anurag Kashyap to write his first screenplay. He later said the film's 'two-friends-on-opposite-sides-of-the-law' dynamic was the seed for Gangs of Wasseypur.
