The Juhi Chawla & V. Ravichandran partnership

From Paruva Ragam (1987) to Nattukku Oru Nallavan (1991). The played out closed with Nattukku Oru Nallavan in 1991. It started with Paruva Ragam (1987).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Paruva Ragam; the 1990s to Shanti Kranti. Never on the same side of the camera — Juhi Chawla actor, V. Ravichandran director, across all 3 films.

Partnership facts

  • Ravichandran was already a huge Kannada star when he decided to launch himself in Tamil with Paruva Ragam (1987). He personally chose Juhi Chawla as his heroine — she was a fresh face with just one Hindi film out. He bet his Tamil debut on a newcomer.
  • On the sets of Shanti Kranti (1991), Ravichandran directed the film himself and would often pause mid-scene to explain Juhi's blocking in Tamil, then switch to Hindi to walk her through the emotion. She later said his patience made her comfortable enough to improvise — something she rarely did with other co-stars.
  • Juhi and Ravichandran stayed in touch long after their films ended. In the early 2000s, when Ravichandran was producing a Kannada film, he called Juhi to dub for a Tamil-dubbed version of it — just because he wanted her voice in his movie again.
  • Juhi once said in an interview: 'Ravichandran was the first co-star who treated me like a partner, not just a heroine. He'd ask my opinion on scenes. That never happened before.'
  • Their third film together, Nattukku Oru Nallavan (1991), was a remake of Ravichandran's own Kannada hit. Because of their pairing, the Tamil version got a wider release in Karnataka — and it directly led to Juhi being cast in a Kannada film opposite Ravichandran again the next year.
