The M. G. Ramachandran & Krishnan-Panju partnership

From Petralthan Pillaiya (1966) to Idhaya Veenai (1972). The played out closed with Idhaya Veenai in 1972. Engal Thangam is the one most viewers reach for.

It started with Petralthan Pillaiya (1966).

The shape of the work

The 1960s belonged to Petralthan Pillaiya; the 1970s to Engal Thangam. M. G. Ramachandran acted in every film; Krishnan-Panju directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Krishnan-Panju were the first to cast MGR in a full-length double role. They did it in 'Petralthan Pillaiya' (1966), and the gamble paid off so big that MGR started demanding double roles in almost every film after that.
  • On the set of 'Engal Thangam' (1970), MGR would rewrite his own dialogues the night before shooting. Krishnan-Panju didn't stop him — they let him improvise freely, which gave the film a looser, more natural rhythm than MGR's usual formula films.
  • Krishnan-Panju were the only director duo MGR trusted to shoot his political rallies on film. They personally handled the camera for his 1967 election campaign footage, which MGR later used in his speeches.
  • The song 'Aayiram Malargale' from 'Idhaya Veenai' (1972) was the first Tamil film song to be recorded with a full 40-piece orchestra in Madras. Krishnan-Panju pushed for it, and MGR paid for the extra musicians out of his own pocket.
  • Panju once said: 'MGR would never say no to a scene we wrote. But he'd always ask, "Is this the best way to reach the people?" He made us think like politicians, not just filmmakers.'
