The M. S. Narayana & V. V. Vinayak partnership

From Aadi (2002) to Naayak (2013). Tagore is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Aadi (2002).

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 2000s belonged to Tagore; the 2010s to Adhurs. M. S. Narayana acted in every film; V. V. Vinayak directed all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • The 'Babloo' character from 'Dil' (2003) became so popular that Vinayak wrote a similar fast-talking sidekick for NTR Jr. in 'Adhurs' (2010). That character, 'Bhattu', directly inspired a wave of hyper-energetic comic sidekicks in Telugu masala films for the next five years.
  • Vinayak was an assistant director on 'Dil' (2003). Narayana was already a known comedian. Vinayak wrote the role of 'Babloo' specifically for Narayana after watching his timing in a stage play. That role became Narayana's breakout comic character.
  • On the sets of 'Tagore' (2003), Vinayak realized Narayana could do more than slapstick. He gave Narayana a dramatic scene where his character breaks down after a tragedy. Narayana shot it in one take. Vinayak later said that scene made him trust Narayana with any emotion.
  • Vinayak and Narayana had a standing bet on every film: if Narayana made the crew laugh during a serious scene, Vinayak would buy him biryani. Narayana lost only once — during 'Adhurs' (2010), when he couldn't stop laughing at his own dialogue and Vinayak made him do 14 retakes.
  • After 'Tagore' (2003) became a blockbuster, Vinayak promised Narayana a role in every film he directed. He kept that promise for four films straight — until Narayana's health declined. Their last film together, 'Naayak' (2013), was also Vinayak's last film with Narayana alive.
