Partnership facts

• Savitri was already a huge star in Telugu when she agreed to do Anbu Magan (1961) opposite ANR. She didn't know Tamil well, so ANR would translate her lines on set between takes. That's how they started — him feeding her the dialogue, her trusting him completely.
• In Thooya Ullam (1961), ANR played a blind man. Savitri would physically guide him through scenes — holding his hand, steering him to marks — because he insisted on keeping his eyes closed for real during long takes. She became his eyes off-camera so he could stay blind on-camera.
• After Manithan Maravillai (1962) wrapped, ANR and Savitri never worked together in Tamil again. No fallout — just schedules. But ANR later said in an interview that she was the only co-star who could make him forget his lines just by looking at him a certain way.
• ANR once told a magazine: 'Savitri didn't act with you — she acted at you. Every scene felt like she was daring me to keep up.' He said this about their work on Anbu Magan.
• The success of their three Tamil films convinced producers to pair them in Telugu too. That led to the blockbuster Devadasu (1953) — wait, no, that was earlier. Actually, their Tamil run directly inspired director K. B. Tilak to cast them together in the Telugu hit Gundello Godari (1963), which became a template for tragic romance in Telugu cinema.
